Dear Jonathan,
I have now been working with Jonathan Young for around ten years on a wide variety of films from the toughest current affairs (Panorama, Hooligans, Hells Angels) to glorious travelogue (Explore, Tropic of Cancer).
The man is brave, tough, reliable and talented. Over the years Jonathan has developed his great eye to the level where he can shoot pictures to compare with any documentary cameraman in country.
When you combine that with the willingness, not to say total enthusiasm, to work in tough environments under any conditions, I think you are talking about a unique package.
Most recently I series produced a new format for BBC2 prime time called Explore. I worked closely with Jonathan, who shot three of the four films (Argentina, The Philippines and the Rift Valley), in developing the look and the feel of the series.
He also needed to create a good working relationship with three directors and five different presenters, which he did with his usual good humour.
And when the volcano erupted in Argentina, there isn't anyone else I would rather have had with me! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Jonathan's work to anyone.

Dear Jonathan,
I've spent several months of my life travelling and working with Mr Young, and as I'm not mad about spending large chunks of my life with folk who aren't pleasant, I'm delighted to say he's an absolute diamond to be with, a wonder to work with, and a cameraman with outstanding vision and stamina. He also makes places and people -- even presenters -- look fantastic. And you can't ask much more than that.

Dear Jonathan,
I just wanted to write to say thank you for doing such a totally wonderful job on the Coptic/Roman/French Gothic film.
You were exceptional, it really was brilliant work on camera, and I don't say that kind of stuff lightly, not being a darling type. I was bowled over by your insight into the art, the people, the meaning of the whole piece - very rare for every element to be done so sensitively and creatively, and it shone through in every inch of the film.
So happy new year, and I hope we have the chance to work together again.
Very best

Hi Jonathan
I just want to thank you for the lovely set of rushes that you filmed for me in Uganda. Stars of the African sequence: Father Musaala's abstinence rally and Lillian's condom class - which both looked lovely (particularly the images you filmed of Lilian in that water tower of a Cathedral).
The film seems to have gone down very well and did manage to bring in one of Panorama's largest audiences for a while (3.7 million). Whether it has an effect on Catholic teaching about condoms remains to be seen.
So thank you - I really did appreciate your team spirit and sense of humour on the road - both of which helped make a hard shoot much more enjoyable. So it was a pleasure to work with you and I hope we can do so again in the not to distant future.
All the best - Tony Stark

Hi Jonathan
We're all set to begin the edit on Monday and it looks great. Thanks very much for your usual dedication to duty and flair. The rushes look fabulous. You went the extra mile as always. It's a shame we won't get it all in. We all enjoyed working with you, so thanks again for a great job. (The film's to get the full big trail treatment by the way).
Take care

Dear Jonathan
I have worked with Jonathan, as a Reporter and a Producer, on a variety of BBC projects including Crooked Britain for BBC2 and Kenyon Confronts for BBC1. I have been consistently impressed by his energy, his determination and his dedication.
In every situation Jonathan has delivered the goods - working beyond the call of duty to get the best out of any given situation. His visual ideas are excellent as is the quality of material he produces. He's also good fun and a real pleasure to work with - I am always delighted to see his name on the call sheet.

To whom it may concern,
I have worked with Jonathan Young over the past six years on programmes as varied as Watchdog, Panorama and BBC 2's investigative car programme 'Lifting the Bonnet'. Jonathan has always proven himself to be the most dedicated, collaborative and flexible cameraman I have ever worked with.
Most recently Jonathan was one of two permanent cameraman on the investigative series I produced called 'Lifting the Bonnet'. Jonathan worked closely with me and the programme directors to develop and maintain the series style. Jonathan grasps creative challenges very quickly and always comes up with new ways to shoot sequences quickly. He was also instrumental in working with a new presenter who needed a lot of positive direction and encouragement to perform. The team enjoyed working with him immensely and were extremely happy with the material he created for their individual films.
Jonathan brings a lot more to the team than his creativity. He also adds to the overall producing effort. For example, we shot a fast turnaround Panorama together on safety in the American nuclear industry. The schedule in terms of working hours and distances to be covered was back breaking. Jonathan maintained boundless enthusiasm and energy throughout. As usual he was a huge help to me in making the schedule and travel work around last minute changes on the road. He never ever complains about the working pressures he is invariably placed under. His trademark tenacity, energy and a positive attitude shone throughout many grim scenarios including driving 500 km through the Idaho desert in order to tramp in hailstones through five graveyards to find one victims gravestone.
In summary Jonathan is always the first cameraman I call for a new assignment as I know the product will be top class and the experience will be a good one.

Jonathan
I wanted to thank all of you for the superb work you put into creating the brilliant programme that was "England's Shame". I have rarely worked with a Panorama team that worked so hard and harmoniously. You all know how difficult the circumstances were and what risk we were taking, so the achievement and the plaudits the programme have received are all the more gratifying.
I especially want to express my appreciation for all you who were involved in the violent situations. Your determination to get close to the action, provided really startling actuality that brought the story to life. It gave the most graphic account ever of English hooliganism. You gave us the most exciting pictures seen on Panorama for many years, I'm very grateful.

Dear Jonathan
Thank you very much for your contribution to Mondays Kosovo special. The pictures you captured of the attempted lynching of the gypsies was the filmic highlight of the programme. It must have been a scary experience being there. I'm glad and relieved you survived it and produced such a strong element of the programme.
The programme had pace and imagination and it carried a much wider range of views than anything else on the end of the war. I was very proud of it.
Tony Hall has asked me to congratulate you all for a programme that was really worthwhile and made a big splash. Well done and thanks for all you did to make that happen.
Well done

Dear Jonathan
Toby's filled me in on your excellent effort in Macedonia. It was extraordinary to get the riot - it was obviously no picnic for you, but you got the material and in doing so helped us create a magnificent piece which led the special programme. The team were also extremely grateful for your nous on the ground and help in picking up information.
Your enthusiasm, as always, helped us pull off something really strong.
Thanks a million
